How It Works
Wire gauge must be sized to keep voltage drop below 3% for efficiency and safety. Longer distances and higher currents require thicker wire. Use the formula: Circular Mils = 2 x Distance x Amps x 10.75 / Max Voltage Drop. Lower voltage systems (12V, 24V) need much thicker wire than 48V systems for the same power, which is why 48V is preferred for off-grid.
