How It Works

Solar panel sizing depends on three key factors: your electricity usage, peak sun hours in your area, and system efficiency losses. The typical US home uses 900 kWh/month. Peak sun hours vary from 3-4 in the Northeast to 6-7 in the Southwest. System losses of 15-25% account for inverter conversion, wiring, shading, soiling, and temperature derating. A standard 400W panel is about 17.5 square feet.
